By answering these two basic questions you will know exactly what you need.
- What are your means of transportation?
- Do you have a tendency to feel hot or cold?
A brief reflection on how you get around, to and from work or simply around your neighborhood gives you a good idea on how much time you will be spending outside. If you mainly take your car, a light woolen coat either short or long would be sufficient for you.
If you go everywhere on your bicycle, then of course a short woolen jacket is the way to go. It will keep you warm, without being too warm. And the best thing is that it won’t get stuck in the wheels or chain on your bicycle.
If you mainly walk to and from work or simply spend more time outdoors, then a down jacket or coat would be the way to go.
If you often feel warm, then a woolen coat in an oversized fit might be the way to go, you can easily layer up when needed. And if you have a tendency to be freezing in the warmest kind of outerwear you can get, a down jacket will keep you warm on even the coldest of days.
An important thing to remember is that it is always a bad idea to wear your woolen coat or jacket in any weather. They are made for cold dry days and on rainy days a raincoat is the best option. A down jacket or coat tend to have a more technical surface which will allow it to withstand even harsher weather, but in heavy rain the raincoat is your best option.
